The Issue

The weevil is a serious issue in nurseries as well as in home ornamental plantings. While the adult weevils feed on foliage which results in unsightly appearances, the more serious damage is done by grubs/larvae which feed on the host plant roots. The larvae may endanger the main stem which can kill the plant.

Signs of Weevils

Adults are approximately a ½” long with a shorter snout and an angled antennae. Their bodies are a gray to brown color, and their wings have small patches of hairs (often golden in color). All adults are female and unable to fly. The legless larvae are a white, cream color with shiny brown heads and will measure a little over ½” at maturity.

The Solution

Lynch Plant Healthcare recommends treating the adults several weeks after emergence which is before egg laying occurs. We will apply the spray insecticide thoroughly to the plant and surrounding soil. Adults will emerge over time so a second foliar spray will be applied three-four weeks after the first application occurs.
